Leeds United came away with a draw from Bristol City but showed an over-reliance on Wilfried Gnonto as the ideas dried up for everyone else
This was not a pretty afternoon of Championship football, it was just Championship football. It was like so many of those away days you can no longer remember. Neither Bristol City nor Leeds United were especially watchable and when they did get into the final third they were either crowded out of a chance or spurning them altogether.
Brenden Aaronson played a big part in defence, winning nine ground duels to take the ball back, but in attack, he struggled to find a foothold in the game. The off-ball runs, passing between the lines and pocket presence just weren’t there for the American at Ashton Gate. On the day, it was Gnonto who looked the most likely to serve something up, as on several occasions already this season. There was the aforementioned slide rule to James, a long-range drive that stung O’Leary’s palms and the best of the lot, that effort cleared off the line by Zak Vyner.
Just to add insult to injury, Gnonto’s tentative influence began to wane in the final 20 minutes, no doubt sapped by his third start in eight days. There’s no need to throw the baby out with the bathwater because this remains a good block of results under Farke, but the reliance on Gnonto in circumstances like these is something to monitor in the future.
