Blur drummer Dave Rowntree has spoken out in support of assisted dying after his ex-wife was forced to travel to Dignitas alone to end her own life earlier this year
Blur drummer Dave Rowntree has slammed the 'psychopathic' laws on assisted death, revealing for the first time that his terminally ill ex-wife felt forced to end her life alone in Switzerland earlier this year. The 60 year old expressed his frustration over current laws that present some people with terminal illnesses with the 'brutal' choice of wanting to end their lives, but being unable to legally request assistance from others.
Knowing her cancer was terminal, she didn't want to face a probably painful and undignified death. Her pain was made worse due to the fact she was allergic to her painkillers. Six months after his ex-wife's passing at Dignitas in Switzerland, Rowntree has labelled the UK's current assisted dying laws as 'psychopathic', criticising them for showing "absolutely no empathy for the sufferer".
As an alternative to the proposed bill, opponents are advocating for enhanced palliative care solutions while the intricate matter continues to spark intense discussion leading up to next month's pivotal decision. In a deeply moving interview, Rowntree expressed his frustration with the current laws on assisted dying, saying: "It is the system washing its hands of difficult problems in a way that I can't stomach. That's the whole point of the state.
However, heartbreakingly, Marra changed her mind and asked Rowntree to fly over once she landed in Zurich. The musician told the Guardian how his ex told him "I don’t know if I can do this on my own" and he immediately began searching for flights out there. She then called him back to urge him not to come and she died alone the following morning.
