Fifty years after the World Health Organization, insurance companies and even schools started using BMI, it\u0027s facing a moment of reckoning
Many of the arguments for putting the BMI out to pasture aren’t new, notably that the fat measurement system doesn’t account for bone or muscle or frame size, and overestimates fatness in those with leaner body mass.

He and a former student, Irfan Khan, now at University College Cork in Ireland, presented an abstract at a European diabetes conference last month that found waist-hip ratio more reliably predicts an early death than BMI. Their analysis, which also involved data from a U.K. biobank of participants with genes known to raise the risk of weight gain, found the mortality risk was lowest for those with the lowest WHR, and it rose steadily with increasing WHR.
“We need to shift the way we’re thinking about fat away from sheer quantity towards distribution, which seems more physiologically relevant,” said Paré, a professor of pathology and molecular medicine. But they did not have a higher risk of heart attack, stroke or cardiovascular death than metabolically healthy people with no obesity.
