New design and slimmed line-up part of push to continue sales of brand's best selling car
BMW has ditched diesel powertrains and manual ‘box offerings as part of a new muscular makeover and tech-filled refresh for its 1 Series. Marking 20 years since the launch of its best selling model, the mild-life redesign, arriving in October, is intended to continue the third-generation hatch’s sales trajectory, building on last year’s 64% rise to 22,855 UK registrations. In total, the brand has sold more than three million examples in the model’s lifetime.
The previous car’s tooth-like kidney grilles have also gone, replaced by something more akin to the BMW 3 Series. That new grille gets a touch of modernisation, too, with the design featuring diagonal bars at its edges. The top-rung M135 xDrive, and M Sport specified cars, feature a more simplistic and open black grille design. In comparison, the rear has had little work done.
