The school, a Catholic boarding school for boys and girls aged 4 to 18, cited the introduction of VAT on school fees, increases to the National Living Wage, and employers' national insurance as contributing factors. The closure has devastated locals, with one father expressing disappointment as he had planned to send his son to Amherst.
Pupils will be offered places at other schools run by the Loughborough Schools Foundation, but staff may lose their jobs. A consultation period is underway until the end of the Spring Term. This school is among several independent schools blaming Labour's policies, particularly the 20% VAT charge on fees, for their closure decisions. Amherst, which charges £19,500 per year for senior day pupils and £50,100 for full boarders, was previously known as Our Lady's Convent School before being renamed after its takeover by the Loughborough Schools Foundation in 2015. Despite financial support and efforts to increase pupil numbers, the school was unable to maintain a surplus due to rising costs and taxes
