I’ve been writing about video games, television and movies for Forbes for over 10 years, and you may have seen my reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. I cover all manner of console and PC games, but if it’s about looting or shooting, I’m definitely there. If I’m watching something, it’s usually science fiction, horror or superheroic.
'Managing Excellence: Getting Consistently Great Results' at the Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts on October 19, 2016 in San Francisco, California. There is a real possibility that the US government will pass legislation that China’s ByteDance must divest itself from TikTok or risk being banned in the US entirely. It’s making its way through congress and Joe Biden himself said he would sign it if it reached his desk.
As such, US buyers are potentially circling, including a recent departure from the gaming industry, former Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick. Kotick left Activision shortly after Microsoft acquired it, ending a tenure marked by scandal involving a culture of sexual harassment at the company with some accusations even leveled at him personally. But he ended up escaping with enormous amounts of cash, and is now trying to find partners to potentially buy TikTok should ByteDance actually be forced to divest.that Kotick has approaching ByteDance’s executive chair Zhang Yiming to express interest in the purchase.
It is currently not a sure thing the bill passes, where it may find trouble in the Senate over “free speech” concerns. There is also the notion that banning arguably the most popular app in the country for young people ahead of an election where Joe Biden desperately needs the youth vote may not be a great political move.. He says it would boost Facebook and “Zuckerschmuck” who he deems a “True enemy of the people.
As for Kotick acquiring TikTok with partners, everyone in the gaming industry would likely be skeptical of the man grabbing onto far more power than he ever had at Activision given what a force TikTok is in society at large. But it’s early days, and we don’t know how this will all play out yet.
