An underwater drone discovered the body of the missing jet skier in about 15 feet of water 150 feet from the shore of the Connecticut River days after the crash.
The body of a jet skier who went missing following a collision with a boat Sunday evening on the Connecticut River in Northampton, Massachusetts, was found Tuesday, police said.
The incident was reported about 7 p.m. Sunday, Massachusetts State Police said. Two occupants of the boat were rescued by Environmental Police Officers and taken to the state boat ramp along Route 5 where they were then transferred to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Police did not say what injuries they may have suffered.
Crews from state police, environmental police and other local public safety agencies searched on the river for the missing jet skier until just before midnight Sunday, police said. Search teams resumed their efforts Monday but they did not locate the missing jet-ski operator. An underwater drone discovered the body in about 15 feet of water 150 feet from the shore just before 1 p.m. Tuesday, and divers recovered it, police said. The man was identified as Carlos Lopez; officials had previously said the missing man was 51.Sign up for NECN newsletters.Troopers and officers deployed side-scan sonar equipment, which feeds a sonar image of the water column and river bottom back to a monitor on the boats.
