The woman's death is currently being treated as 'unexpected and unexplained', with officers cordoning off the area.
Emergency services rushed to a flat block near Golders Green around 9am after a shocked resident discovered the woman's body and found a rucksack nearby.
A resident who saw the heavy police presence in the area told reporters: "There was a body found in a recycling bin. A picture from the scene, at the foot of a block called Harpenmead Point, shows officers investigating a cordoned off area. A pink rucksack can also be seen on top of one of the bins.
