WADSWORTH , Ohio - 19 News received the body cam footage of a fatal shooting from June 18 where Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation confirmed at least one Wadsworth police officer did fire their service weapon.
The video shows the moments before shots rang out in a residential backyard which left 54-year-old Shannon Sloan, dead at the scene, Wadsworth Police Chief Dan Chafin confirmed. Chief Chafin said officers arrived to the 200 block of Durling Drive around 9 p.m. after receiving reports of a man with a handgun in a backyard threatening suicide.Ohio BCI spokesman Steve Irwin confirmed Wadsworth officers fired their service weapons based on preliminary information, however as of June 28 the investigation is ongoing.
“It is best practice in the state of Ohio that when you have an incident like this, because there does need to be a fair, thorough, and impartial investigation, it makes for that investigation to not be done by the Wadsworth Police Department,” said Chafin.However, Chafin told 19 News at this time, he doesn’t believe the suspect fired his weapon.
“As it relates to mental health and mental well being, there are resources out there. We understand that people have struggles and we understand how real those struggles can be from time to time,” said Chafin.Chafin also clarified the shooting was not related to the city’sCopyright 2024 WOIO.
