Bolton reach the League One play-off final with a 5-4 aggregate win over Barnsley, despite losing the second leg at home.

Bolton Wanderers secured their place in the League One play-off final, despite losing 3-2 to Barnsley in their semi-final second leg.Wanderers striker Aaron Collins had found the net from 25 yards to cancel out Sam Cosgrove's close-range header, before Eoin Toal nodded in from a corner to establish a three-goal cushion.

Instead it will be Ian Evatt's side, who finished third in League One, that will face either Oxford United or Peterborough United for a place in the Championship on Saturday, 18 May.When Bolton last played at Championship level in 2019, they were about to go into administration and the very existence of the club was under threat.

They were in the mix for automatic promotion for much of this season and the signing of Collins from fellow League One club Bristol Rovers in January helped to provide fresh momentum in the second half of the campaign - his first-half strike was his seventh goal in his past eight appearances. However, Bolton repelled their late pressure to avenge their loss to the Tykes at the same stage of last season's League One play-offs.All times UK. Tables are subject to change. The BBC is not responsible for any changes that may be made.Bolton have lost only two of their last 21 games in all competitions against Barnsley , with both defeats being by a one-goal margin in November 2022 and May 2023 .

Following their 3-1 win in the first leg, Bolton won the first leg of a Football League play off semi-final for just the second time, previously doing so against Ipswich in May 1999; they progressed to the final that season. Barnsley meanwhile lost the first leg for a third time, previously doing so in May 2006 when they won promotion to the Championship, and in May 2021 to Swansea.
