Osteoporosis results in weakened bones and an elevated fracture risk. Pharmaceuticals, including bisphosphonates, selective estrogen receptor modulators , recombinant antibodies, and synthetic hormones, are crucial in managing bone density for osteoporosis. Detrimental lifestyle factors such as smoking or excessive alcohol consumption can cause poor bone health by reducing bone density through various mechanisms. Osteoporosis frequently follows from these behaviors and can result in bone fractures, diminished mobility, persistent pain, and an overall decline in quality of life.
As previously stated, smoking, drinking alcohol, and having a sedentary lifestyle also increase the likelihood of developing osteoporosis. Denosumab is a monoclonal antibody targeting the protein RANKL, which acts as the primary signal to promote bone resorption. This way, it inhibits osteoclast activity. Another monoclonal antibody is Romosozumab.
