Bonnie Langford Doctor Who interview
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Doctor Who has been a whirlwind this season, with the Doctor and Ruby Sunday experiencing thrilling adventures through space and time. They've survived a war-torn alien planet, defeating Maestro to save the Beatles, and facing off against cosplaying aliens during a ball straight out of Bridgerton, but all the time the pair have been tiptoeing around the mystery surrounding Ruby's origins.
"Mel Is Back" Bonnie Langford Breaks Down How Mel Has Evolved Since She First Debuted On Screen Langford shared her excitement about returning to the role of Mel Bush in this era of Doctor Who. She explained how the character has grown off-screen in the audio dramas and how she is excited to show Mel finding her place in the world after leaving the TARDIS.
And then a few years ago, well probably about 20 years ago now, I got asked if I would be part of these audio dramas for a company called Big Finish and they're like doing little radio plays. And the great part is, is that what we lacked in budget and ability as far as effects were concerned, obviously it's in your imagination .
Mel, like all companions who leave the TARDIS, has lived a full life without the Doctor. Although she alluded to losing her family, the details remain a mystery. However, after finding her place with UNIT, Mel has been able to put her skills, experiences with the Doctor, and desire to help to good use. Langford also shared the qualities that both she and her character admire about the Doctor.
It has a lot of teaching about it, about how to live in the world we live in, how to be inclusive, how to understand people, but also to face our fears and to understand our fears. Mel, I think, is really admiring of that and respectful of that. We all try and emulate what he basically sets. He sets the bar very high, but in this one with Ncuti as well, what's so lovely is that he shows the Doctor's vulnerabilities, which has not always been shown in the past.
But it sort of teaches you, in a storytelling way, how to feel better about yourself. That's one of the big pluses about this show is that it's just a way of saying embrace who you are, embrace everybody, and don't ignore people or turn them away just because you don't understand where they're coming from.
At the same time UNIT have discovered that there's an enterprise that are slightly dodgy. They're not sure, there's something peculiar about it. So Mel has gone undercover and is working in that office and in that building to try to find out what actually is going on and what's the bottom of all this, and reports back with intel all the time.
Bonnie Langford: It's strange because as an actor you're used to people being recast. You're used to having a different type, but this is very much, it's sort of like, yes, a new person undertaking a role, but they've still got the core of that character, but dressed up in a very different guise. There was a time at first when I was thinking, I wonder how Mel feels about this because it's not her Doctor.
