14 times. That leaves just about a third of the contests won in any other language. This is despite two periods during which contest rules required countries to sing in their own languages. Our analysis of all performances since 1999 shows that, on average, songs in languages other than English receive 7% fewer points than those in English. But performers who mix English lyrics with another language can be a hit: they receive 3% more votes than those who sing in English alone.
Though Eurovision draws in big crowds, its winners do not tend to become pop sensations . And the political nature of the contest means that acts’ success relies just as much on their countries’ foreign relations as the catchiness of their choruses—though it tends to help if they are sung in English.
