There was ill-feeling aplenty at Lord's, of all places, but Pat Cummins is emerging from it all as a fine Australian captain against England’s formidable Ben Stokes.
It was “the best of times, it was the worst of times”, as Charles Dickens once wrote.
The Lord’s Test had it all, and then some. It was topped by Stokes’ remarkable 155, complete with three consecutive, towering sixes off Australian quick Cameron Green, rocketing the English captain’s innings to a century from 82.As Stokes dominated the run-scoring, Australia had all its fielders on the boundary in a reverse-Bazball defensive effort.
As England’s batters, led by Stokes, were threatening to snatch an unlikely victory, Australian all-rounder Green bowled a short ball that reared past Bairstow and into wicketkeeper Carey’s gloves.Bairstow casually wandered off his crease and Carey knocked down the stumps with an under-arm throw. The Australian players appealed and celebrated the stumping. At the same time, the Lord’s crowd roared its disapproval, many yelling “same old Aussies, always cheating”.
There were reports that Australian opener David Warner was physically accosted by an MCC member. Another member was reprimanded for abusing and allegedly pushing Australian top-order batter Marnus Labuschagne. The emotion on display was also testimony to the fact that a Britain bruised by political scandal and the Brexit mess would welcome a win – any win – but victory against the old cricket enemy, Australia, during an Ashes tour would be particularly sweet. But, Ashes-wise, England already had its back up against the wall. The second Test at Lord’s followed a narrow Australian victory in the first Test at Edgbaston.
Vaughan’s response: “England have been too friendly with Australia this series, and it’s not the way to go. The Ashes is not just another series and never has been. It’s a stressful, draining and exhausting thing to be part of,” Vaughan told the British paper.“It all feels too easy and welcoming for Australia. They’re the away team in an Ashes series, but they’re being allowed to treat it all like it’s just another game of cricket. But it’s not – it’s the Ashes.
This realisation dawned on the English team at Lord’s as the gruelling nature of the second Test sunk in.
