While Wittington Investments, the Canadian investment firm owned by the billionaire Weston dynasty of business tycoons, has not publicly commented on the rumours, Australian firm Sigma confirmed it was in early talks to buy Boots on Wednesday, June 10.
The pharmacy company, which is one of the largest retailers in Australia, said it had “engaged in preliminary discussions in relation to the sale process”. Boots is the largest private employer in Nottinghamshire and has around 6,000 staff at its sprawling global headquarters between Nottingham and Beeston. As well as employing thousands of people at its Thane Road HQ, the company's history is deeply rooted in Nottingham - with John Boot opening the first store on Goose Gate in 1849.
, within which part of Boots' base of operations is located, said he would be keen to work with any new owner to increase investment and job creation.
"We would be more than interested in promoting a working relationship with the new owners to try and secure more investment in new jobs in the area, particuarly in the pharmaceutical industry amd associated tech industries," the Broxtowe Alliance council leader said. Boots first started operating from its vast Thane Road compound, which is split between Broxtowe borough and Nottingham City Council's boundaries, in the 1920s.
As well as being a significant local employer, the site is of notable historic and architectural value, mostly owing to its pair of striking 1930s factory buildings - D10 and D6.
"It is a British landmark, some of the industrial buildings are Grade I-listed," Councillor Radulovic added.and increased its profit before tax by a huge 25 per cent to £337 million last year, according to its recently published financial results. It recorded a post-tax profit of £261 million in the year to August 31, 2025, an increase of £50 million on the year before. Boots became a standalone private company last year after its previous owner, the struggling American pharmacy chain
