David Steer, from Bacup, started 'ranting and raving' before launching a vicious attack
David Alan Steer from Bacup had been out drinking on Thursday March 23 after receiving his benefits despite his pensioner mum Christine Hughes pleading with him not to. He had agreed to leave £100 with her so he didn't spend all his money but after downing a bottle of whisky he returned to her home in Market Street, Whitworth, and asked for £20.
"She was persuaded to allow him to stay for a couple of weeks while he sorted himself out. On March 23 the defendant received his benefits and his mother said she advised him not to go to the pub. Defence solicitor Ian Huggan said that Steer had a long-standing problem with alcohol. The dad-of-three had asked his mum if he could stay with her, instead of at the Hill View hostel, because it was "like a prison".
