Boris Johnson’s allies have opened up fresh lines of attack on Rishi Sunak after he controversially scrapped proposed laws to ban live animal exports and puppy smuggling RichardVaughan1 reports

The plans to further protect animals were introduced by Mr Johnson under the Kept Animals Bill, which would have made it illegal to export livestock and block the import of dogs, cats and ferrets., following the decision earlier this year to scrap a ban on the import of foie gras and fur.

The latest move to ditch measures that would have included handing the authorities greater powers to prohibit puppy and kitten smuggling into the UK has sparked a serious backlash from MPs, promptingMs Jenkyns said the Government “must push through the legislation” to ensure the party meets its 2019 manifesto commitments., she added: “The Prime Minister’s decision to pull the bill flies in the face of our manifesto commitment, which gained the largest majority in a generation.

The bill had the backing of MPs at second reading and through committee stage, but it was pulled by the Government last month, with ministers insisting the measures could be achieved without legislation. But Ms Jenkyns has launched a petition via the parliament website with the aim of attracting 100,000 signatures to ensure the matter is debated in the Commons.Since 2015 I’ve been vocal about animal welfare policies, we must push this through Parliament & honour 2019 manifesto commitments!
