Can Boris reject the partygate inquiry verdict? He will be invited to respond to the Privileges Committee's report before it is published – but he won't be able to prevent any sanctions being imposed

Mr Johnson will get to provide final evidence to the committee before it finishes its inquiry, and will have a chance to respond to its findings ahead of the publication of its report.

Once it is published, the matter will be referred to the House of Commons, which will have the final say on whether any sanctions go ahead. Under this process, MPs can appeal the decision made by the Commissioner by submitting a complaint to the Independent Expert Panel, which is not made up of MPs. The Privileges Committee is only convened at the request of Parliament to look at specific cases referred to it by the House and deals with matters relating to contempt of Parliament.

Following a debate in the House, Members will vote on the matter. It is the convention that this is a free vote, meaning MPs are not required to vote in line with their party. What happens if Boris Johnson is suspended?
