Mr Johnson received 'active support' from Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron, who he texted on his way to what was described as a 'private visit' with the Venezuelan leader.
Boris Johnson flew to Venezuela last month to meet the country's controversial leader Nicolas Maduro. A spokesperson for the former prime minister confirmed the meeting took place after The Sunday Times reported he had flown there for 'unofficial talks' with the Venezuelan president, who is an ally of Russia.
Mr Maduro is considered by many countries to be an authoritarian leader who has not allowed free and fair elections, with the US and some other Western countries, including the UK, claiming his re-election in 2018 was illegitimate. But Russia and China have regularly backed the controversial leader, who first became Venezuela's interim president in March 2013 after the death of Hugo Chavez.
