The Farage factor may be bringing out his competitive urge
I would not rule out that Johnson, like many extroverts, has a thin skin, and a desire for a legacy he believes was trashed in the wake of the Partygate to the Tory election fray? The former leader – who believes that the Conservatives signed their death warrant when they got rid of him – was not, until now, much inclined to get out of bed to assist Rishi Sunak, who assisted at the dramatic Boris regicide two years ago..
That boat has sailed. Tory MPs now accept that they will either go down with the Rishi ship or, in these last days of the campaign, somehow scrabble back from disaster if enough protest voters tending towards Farage can be persuaded that this is a “poison pill” which will entrench Labour in power on a grand scale.
Yet the Prime Minister also wants to foreground that this is not simply happening on Boris’s terms but is being managed by “the campaign”. In this, I simply read that Isaac Levido, Sunak’s chief strategist, who maintains good relations with Johnson , is behind it. And yes, Johnson often looks tired, and a bit emptied out. “It does not suit him sitting around at home writing and making videos in the hall,” says a longstanding friend. “He gets his energy from being around other people.”
