A former prime minister should think twice before taking to his keyboard
Tempers are fraying in this country over the Israel-Palestinian conflict – and the usual suspects are fanning the flames.
As the former prime minister and foreign secretary should well know, the answers to his questions are “No, they are not” and “No”. On Israel, as on Ukraine, there has been a bipartisan continuation of foreign policy.as “a liberal progressive Zionist who believes in Israel as a democratic state” – a public position long held by ministers in both main parties.
Likewise, Johnson’s opportunistic intervention will change nothing in the conflict. It will increase the Labour Government’s discomfort here and pour petrol on the flames of growing political divisions in this country as both main parties are threatened by challenges on their flanks. Rather than address the Reform/Farage question, the candidates to take over the leadership are merrily mischaracterising the new Government as a pack of far-left activists tearing up the UK’s traditional alliances. At campaign launches yesterday, former foreign secretary James Cleverly claimed that the cancellation of the Rwanda scheme had set back diplomatic relations with “the whole of Africa” for decades.
