Rallies across the UK were largely peaceful, but clashes between protesters and police in London turned violent on Sunday evening.

Gatherings of more than 6 people are still forbidden under Covid-19 legislation, though authorities have not used this to restrict any protests or make arrests.Officers were trying to stop demonstrators entering a restricted area near Downing Street Police in Bristol are investigating ‘criminal damage’ of a statue of prominent 17th-century slave trader Edward Colston which was pulled down by protesters.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast he said it was ‘unforgivable’ that some have been ‘laughing and joking’ about violence against officers, which could lead people to ‘lose sympathy’ for the protests. After Sunday’s clashes, police brought in a Section 35 dispersal notice in the Westminster area barring protesters from the area until 6am on Monday.

Some continued to throw bottles as well as set bins on fire and smash windows as officers tried to enforce the order, according to Sky News.
