💬 “For a long time, my mother wouldn’t admit there was anything wrong”

Still, these instances are unusual. “A very small number of people with young onset Alzheimer’s disease have a faulty gene which is passed down in families. Overall, these gene mutations account for less than one per cent of all cases of Alzheimer’s disease. It usually affects people typically in their forties or fifties, but occasionally symptoms can start at a later age,” Dr Hussey adds.

Amy Lambert, 26, was just 20 when her mother, Sarah, 47 at the time, finally sought treatment for young-onset dementia. “She hadn’t started the menopause yet, but me and my Dad thought maybe that that was related,” says Lambert. Sarah’s personality started to change. She became more unpredictable and forgetful. She would go on shopping trips and return home empty-handed. “I started booking her doctor’s appointments, but she kept cancelling them. She said she felt fine within herself.

Like Samantha, Lambert has been worried about inheriting the condition. “Getting a genetic test is actually something that I have been considering. Mum did have a test to see if it was genetic from her side and it came back saying that she basically had a faulty chromosome, so inheriting it is unlikely. But I still want to do the test at some point, just so it gives you a chance to prepare.”

But for Crozier, 48, his condition was clear. Alan’s mixed-up words were the first thing she noticed. “He started to get his words confused. He would say ‘tenting’ instead of camping,” she recalls. Then, he became confused by simple tasks. “He was really handy around the house, but we noticed he was struggling with things like putting up pictures and hanging pictures. He would be looking at the nail and looking at the hammer.
