Super-featherweight boxer John Cooney is in intensive care after suffering a serious medical emergency following his defeat by Welshman Nathan Howells in Belfast on Saturday. The fight, which was Cooney's first defense of his Celtic super-featherweight title, was stopped in the ninth round at the Ulster Hall. Cooney received immediate medical attention from the onsite team in the ring before being transported to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for further treatment.
In a statement released on Monday, Cooney's promoter Mark Dunlop revealed that the 28-year-old Galway boxer had suffered an intracranial hemorrhage and underwent emergency surgery to relieve the pressure on his brain. Dunlop expressed hope for Cooney's recovery, stating that he is currently in the intensive care unit under the care of the hospital's ICU team. Cooney had previously won the Celtic title with a first-round knockout victory over Liam Gaynor in November 2023 at Dublin's sold-out 3Arena. This victory was part of the undercard featuring Katie Taylor's rematch win against Chantelle Cameron. Cooney then took a year away from the ring to recover from a hand injury before returning to the sport with a win against Tampela Maharusi of Tanzania in London in October 2024
