The boy is understood to have got into difficulty after falling into the river while on an inflatable canoe
The incident, which occurred in the River Croal off Raikes Lane, Bolton, saw police and firefighters rush to the scene at around 8pm on Tuesday . Police said 'despite the best attempts of emergency services' a 17-year-old who was pulled from the water was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Attending along with colleagues from GMFRS, it was established four teenage boys were involved. Sadly, a 17-year-old passed away despite the best attempts of emergency services. Detective Inspector Stuart Woodhead added: "This is an extremely upsetting and distressing incident for those involved due to the tragic circumstances and we are continuing to support their loved ones at this time."
