Shocking CCTV footage reveals the moment a 'boy racer' killed a young footballer after reaching speeds of over 90mph.
Horrific CCTV footage has shown the moment a cocky 'boy racer' was seen reaching speeds of over 90mph just moments before killing a 'talented' young footballer. Mason Hodgson, 23, hit up to 97mph in a 30-zone while behind the wheel of his black Audi S3 on April 10 2022. He was one of hundreds of people at an unauthorised car meet in Warrington. He later struck budding semi-pro footballer Sam Harding, 20, from Stockport, sending him 10 feet into the air.
He sustained serious head injuries and later died. Cheshire Police has now released shocking CCTV footage showing Hodgson speeding along streets in the moments leading up to the tragic collision. The force said that due to the speed he was travelling, Hodgson was unable to brake in time after seeing Samuel in the road. During their enquiries, officers contacted more than 100 witnesses, took statements from 95 people and viewed hundreds of hours of CCTV and mobile phone footage showing the lead-up to the fatal crash. An expert in CCTV analyst reviewed the footage and was able to prove that Hodgson had reached speeds of between 83 and 97mph while driving along Kingsland Grange. In the moments before the collision, he was travelling at between 82 and 88mph, and even after applying the brakes, he was still travelling between 58 and 60mph. Footage was also recovered from Hodgson’s mobile phone which showed him regularly travelling at excessive speed and taking part in competitive driving on public roads. Liverpool Crown Court heard how the car meet was taking place on an industrial estate in Woolston, Warrington. Several hundred people were in attendance at the event, including 20-year-old Samuel, who had visited with his two friends to look at other cars Hodgson, who also attended, then decided to join in by 'attempting to drive as fast as possible' along Kingsland Grange in his black Audi. He was driving down the strip, which had a speed limit of 30mph, when Mr Harding stepped into the road
