It explores his last days on holiday in Majorca with his partner, the shocking discovery of his lifeless body, and the emotional aftermath for his bandmates and loved ones. The article also highlights the enduring impact of his death on the music world and the lasting legacy he left behind.
2009 was set to be a joyful year for Stephen Gately , with his personal and professional life on an upswing. Boyzone fans had recently rejoiced as the band concluded their Back Again... No Matter What tour and were in the middle of recording their fourth studio album, 'Brother'. Tragically, Stephen never saw the release of the album.
In that year, the Dublin-born star and his partner, internet entrepreneur Andrew Cowles, embarked on a month-long working holiday to Port d'Andratx, a resort in Majorca. On October 9, Stephen and Andrew were sprucing up their £1 million retreat in anticipation of visiting relatives and friends. The very next day, a shocking discovery was made: Stephen's lifeless body at the mere age of 33. The forthcoming three-part documentary Boyzone: No Matter What, set to broadcast on February 2, sees bandmate Ronan Keating relive the harrowing moment he found out about Stephen's death, affectionately known as 'Steo' amongst the group. Ronan was tasked with the gut-wrenching duty of informing the rest of Boyzone, including their manager Louis Walsh, reports the Mirror. Ronan exhibited raw emotion in the documentary, recounting: 'My phone rang, it was a solicitor by the name of Gerald King that Boyzone had used in the 90s. Gerald Keen says to me, 'I'm sorry to tell you, but Stephen has passed away.' I said, 'Stephen who? 'And he said, 'Stephen Gately.' I had to call Louis and the guys and give them the news.' The sudden passing of Stephen left his family and admirers in a state of shock, prompting an intense quest for clarity on the events leading up to his death. A neighbour shared with the Mirror their conversation from the evening prior to the tragic news: 'I spoke to them on the Saturday evening and they said they were just going to chill out at home. Stephen said he was tired and was on a health kick, so he was staying off alcohol during his holiday.' However, plans appeared to have shifted, with Stephen and his partner opting to dine and relax in Palma city nearby. The following afternoon saw the harrowing discovery of Stephen's lifeless body on their sofa, later determined to be the result of 'acute' pulmonary oedema, caused by a previously undetected heart ailment. A pathology report absolved any association of his death with substances; rather, he had been in high spirits in the preceding days, bringing some solace to his widower, who told the Mirror: 'I do get some comfort from knowing how happy he was that day. The night he died, we'd had such a good time, a lovely evening in our favourite restaurant. He was the most happy and confident he'd been in his life.' Their evening also included an encounter with Georgi Dochey, a model and student they met at a bar, continuing the festivities together at the Black Cat club before retiring to Stephen and Andrew's residence around 5.30 am. Georgi recounted that after sharing a kiss with Stephen, he fell asleep on the sofa next to Andrew while Georgi retired to a spare room. He was roused by the doorbell at 8am but chose not to answer it as he was a guest - a decision that would haunt him for years to come. 'I heard someone ringing constantly. I got up and looked into the living room and saw Stephen and Andy still lying on the sofa. I just thought, 'It's not my house; I can't answer the door,'' Georgi previously told the Daily Mail. 'I don't know if Stephen was already dead. I think about what might have happened if I had tried to wake him. Could he still be alive? It is really hard to think about things like that.' Georgi revealed that it was only when he paused for a cigarette on his way out that he noticed Stephen hadn't moved from his 'curled up' position on the sofa. 'I went to take his pulse and couldn't find one. I knew he was dead,' he said to The Sun in 2014. He admitted he didn't know how to tell Andrew, who was reportedly sleeping in the couple's bedroom at that time. 'I went into the bedroom and said, 'I'm going. Let's wake Stephen up so I can say goodbye. Andy replied, 'No, leave him sleeping,' and that's when I told him Stephen looked strange,' he recalled. Georgi recounted the distressing moments as Andrew tried desperately to resuscitate his husband, saying, 'Andy was whispering, 'Come on baby, wake up'. He began slapping him around the face when he didn't respond. When he, too, realised he was dead, he broke down in tears. He then tried to revive him by giving him mouth-to-mouth, but there was nothing either of us could do.' Stephen was declared deceased at 2.25 pm, although he had died in his sleep earlier that day. Andrew shared with the Mirror, 'We know from the pathologist's report that Stephen died sleeping with me on the sofa. I know that my boy fell asleep under my arm, his heart stopped, he didn't feel any pain.' Stephen's death was attributed to a pulmonary oedema, initially thought to be due to an undiagnosed heart condition.
