But instead of fast cars and tattoos, Pitt has created coffin art and is selling serums in wooden jars for $385. Is this the very 2022 reinvention of an age-old phenomenon? Or is it unhelpful to still think of a midlife crisis in the same terms of tragedy and embarrassment? Can it be a positive step for reinventing the wheel in middle age?
“The midlife crisis is very common,” says Dee Holmes, relationship counsellor at Relate. “I think sometimes there are various factors coming into play as people get older, which makes them want to make big changes in their life.” Holmes cites children leaving the home as a common contributing factor, as well as the loss of parents as people enter middle age. As well as divorce.
The majority of divorces are initiated by women, ONS figures show. In 2019, women petitioned for 62 per cent of divorces. And while divorce is sometimes a trigger for a midlife crisis, it may also be a consequence of one partner’s middle-aged reinvention. “Divorce often causes people to reinvent themselves,” explains Holmes. “But often this reinvention was already itching to happen before the end of a relationship.
Jackie Pilossoph, 57, from Chicago says “a midlife crisis can happen to anyone at any time. It happens to women all the time.” She got divorced in her 40s. “I got divorced not because of some kind of midlife crisis, but after getting divorced, I really felt like I was very young: like I was starting again,” she says.
Suzy Brown, now 72, from Kansas, split from her husband 20 years ago. “I was just a mess,” she says. Early on, she did a lot of sobbing: “It was just, well, devastation.” But then Brown realised she had a choice: “I thought, ‘am I going to let this destroy me or am I going to figure out a way to have an amazing, good life again? I’m 53 and I’ve got a certain amount of time’.”
