And revealing her political strategy, she pitched herself as the woman to heal a growing split opening up on the Conservative right between Thatcherite classical liberals and Christian-influenced communitarians led by her close ally, along with the likes of Danny Kruger and Miriam Cates – all speakers at this week’s NatCon conference.
“Having observed events in the US in recent years, I do want to sound a note of caution,” Ms Braverman said. “One way that we Conservatives must distinguish ourselves from the Left is by not devouring ourselves through fratricide.“Conservatism must never abandon markets, the rule of law, or a belief in the power of capitalism to lift people out of poverty.“To the extent that those two forces are in tension, it is incumbent on conservatives to find a prudent balance, not pick a side and start shooting.”
We may not have to wait too long to find out whether Ms Braverman can unite the warring factions on the Tory right.
