The Manchester City playmaker is the first player in the club's history to win the prestigious award
The Spaniard claimed the honour in a glitzy award ceremony in Paris, finishing ahead of favourite Vinicius Jr. The Brazilian had been expected to pip Rodri to the honour after helping Real Madrid win the Champions League and the disappointment was palpable with Madrid opting to boycott the ceremony.
But that shouldn’t detract from Rodri’s success. He has been an integral part of the City side and helped them win a fourth straight Premier League title. He then went to the European Championships with Spain and played a key role in helping his country lift the title, defeating England in the final. Rodri becomes the first City player to win the Ballon d'Or, with Erling Haaland finishing fifth after another year ladened with goals.
The Spanish midfielder finished ahead of Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr, Jude Bellingham and Dani Carvajal, with City also represented by Phil Foden and Ruben Dias in the top 30.
