The Irishman will go up against his old Hoops skipper in the dug-out as they kick off pre season on Friday night.

Brendan Rodgers admits he can't wait to go up against his former Celtic captain Scott Brown on his return to action on Friday night - and tipped the Ayr United manager to be a top boss.

Rodgers takes his double winners down the M77 for their first pre-season friendly of the summer against the Honest Men with a familiar face in the opposite dug-out. The Irishman and his charges returned to Lennoxtown and he spoke for the first time ahead of preparations for the new campaign. Brown was appointed at Somerset Park last season having taken his first steps into management at Fleetwood Town in England, before being sacked after 16 months in charge. Rodgers, speaking to Celtic TV, said: “I actually saw him over the course of the summer - I bumped into him in Majorca - and I invited him round to my house so we had a nice wee few hours talking about everything football, Celtic and management so it’s great to see him.

“I look forward to seeing him again and if he’s anywhere near as good a manager as he was a player then he’s going to be fantastic. These are the early steps in Scott’s career and still in that process of learning but he’s got so much to bring the game as a manager, I feel. I always enjoy seeing him and even though this is a pre-season game, it will always be nice to be on the touchline with him.”

Celtic have still to make their first signing but Record Sport revealed they are close to securing Adam Idah, who spent the second half of last season on loan from Norwich City. Rodgers said: “It’s absolutely brilliant to be back. We had a great end to the season, I think everyone enjoyed the off season but it’s really nice to be back and good to see the players and the staff again.”
