The Irishman wants a core of Scottish players to lead his side and admits it leaves him with a Champions League questio

'Two weeks of bliss' Gordon Strachan called it when he described winning an Old Firm right before an international break and Brendan Rodgers knows exactly what he was talking about.

Sounds about right for Rodgers. Especially as last time around he barely had time to draw breath, never mind celebrate. He soaked it up this time and he also believes the win might just be lift off for his new look side. “Sometimes it takes that bit longer. I remember last time the Red Imps, that was a real learning game. But we were then able to go on and have a fantastic season. I think the St Johnstone game crystallised some of the issues that needed to happen to have more clarity.

Rodgers said: “We certainly won’t be weakened in terms of bodies available and I expect us to get better and improve. The players are starting to settle in terms of how we want to work. When you come in with a lot of the players not knowing me you can maybe over-think it a little bit. But we are finding clarity in how we work and the players are responding well.”

When asked if the rules made it tough, he said: “There’s no doubt about that. No doubt. My focus will always personally be on the homegrown players. But if it means that you can’t pick what would be your strongest squad because of it then yeah that can be a deterrent. I think it’s great that you have the players from your affiliated training who are able to be there.

“Having that identity is very important. If I worked in Spain I would want a Spanish core of players. When I work in Scotland I want a Scottish core of players who understand what it’s about.”
