Photo: Chris Ratcliffe/BloombergJames Watt the controversial boss of Brewdog is stepping down from the top job 17 years after he co-founded the ‘punk’ Scottish brewer and pub group.
Mr Watt will take on the newly created non-executive role of “captain and co-founder” and retains his 21 per cent shareholding in the firm. BrewDog chairman Allan Leighton said: “James Watt, alongside Martin Dickie, created this great business from a garage in Fraserburgh. Few have accomplished what he has.
Mr Watt’s tenure has been marred by controversy in recent years, with the firm facing accusatiuons from former workers in 2021 of having a “culture of fear” within the business, with “toxic attitudes” towards junior staff. Mr Watt later apologised to staff and has said since the brewing firm has made changes to avoid such mistakes in the future.
As BrewDog grew, fuelled by an often disrespectful and confrontational marketing strategy, craft beer lovers began to accuse Brewdog of selling out and turning mainstream.
