The southbound carriageway of Manchester's Bridgewater Viaduct will be closed for up to a month, starting January 27th, for pavement widening works. The closure, expected to last two weeks but potentially extending to a month, aims to enhance pedestrian friendliness along Deansgate.

One of the main road routes out of Manchester city centre will be closed for up to a month from Monday (January 27). The southbound carriageway of the Bridgewater Viaduct will be closed between Whitworth Street West and old Deansgate near Owen Street. The viaduct is the primary route from Deansgate , which became southbound-only for motorists last year, to Chester Road and Trafford. Council bosses expect the closure to be in place for two weeks, but say it might be extended for a month.

It is being implemented so the pavement can be widened, as part of the council’s efforts to make Deansgate more pedestrian friendly. Councillor Tracey Rawlins, executive Member for clean air, environment and transport, said the ‘necessary closure’ is ‘in place to ensure that workers in the road are able to carry out their jobs safely, and I would like to thank people in advance for their patience’. A diversion will be in place, a council spokesperson added, via going along Whitworth Street West, Albion Street, and Medlock Street. But drivers have been warned to avoid the area as delays are expected, even with the ‘steps to manage traffic’ being put in place, as the authority has promised
