Fabian Hurzeler lauds Ruairi McConville's maturity and talent after his strong showing in Brighton's FA Cup victory.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has expressed his admiration for Ruairi McConville, Northern Ireland 's latest football star, following his impressive first-team debut in Brighton 's 4-0 FA Cup victory against Norwich City. The young defender, hailing from Belfast, was introduced to the game in the final 20 minutes, replacing Adam Webster and witnessing Solly March's spectacular goal that sealed the win.
Already a senior international player with two caps under his belt for Northern Ireland's national team, led by Michael O'Neill, McConville's rapid ascent through the ranks since his transfer from Linfield to Brighton in 2021 has been remarkable. Hurzeler praised the club's commitment to nurturing young talent, highlighting the exceptional work done at the Brighton Academy and the influence of under-21 coach Shannon Ruth, as reported by the Irish Mirror. 'It's the Brighton way to develop young players,' Hurzeler stated. 'They do a great job at the Academy and we have an unbelievable under-21 coach in Shannon Ruth.' He also commended McConville's maturity and personality, adding: 'Ruairi is very mature for his age, a great personality and deserved to be in the squad. I'm happy he had his chance today and he took it impressively. It will be interesting to see how he develops.' McConville's senior debut for Northern Ireland occurred last November in a 2-0 victory against Belarus, followed by another appearance in a 2-2 draw with Luxembourg.
