My name is Maya Richard-Craven, and I am a Black and neurodivergent journalist from Los Angeles. As someone with an intersectional identity, I feel qualified to discuss neurodivergence, ableism, race, and gender in the workplace. I am no stranger to freelancing.

There is still stigma surrounding menstruation. Some women tuck tampons into their bras at work. Other people with periods slip pads into their wallets when they are headed to the restroom in public. Women and people who have periods are expected to hide it. Period stigma even exists in the workplace. Not enough companies provide period products at work partially due to stigma.

“I founded August in 2020 to cultivate a community that celebrates periods and empowers all menstruators by creating a radically inclusive, open dialogue around menstruation. August's mission is to foster a safe, inclusive space where periods are neither stigmatized nor taboo,” she said. Saying she succeeded would be an understatement. August hasOkamoto thinks companies should openly acknowledge periods.

“The provision of period products at workplaces should indeed be mandatory. It could be implemented by incorporating the policy into the company's health and wellness programs. By providing these essential items, companies demonstrate care for their employees' well-being and contribute to creating a more equitable workplace,” she said.
