Brisbane's Housing Supply Shows Signs of Improvement

The number of dwellings approved in Brisbane in September 2023 has doubled compared to the previous 12 months, indicating an improvement in the housing supply. A record 1072 new homes were approved, with two major developments accounting for the majority of units. Brisbane's Lord Mayor sees this as a positive sign for the housing market.

Brisbane City Council say there are signs Brisbane ’s housing supply is beginning to improve.The council released figures overnight showing the number of dwellings approved in September 2023 doubled the figures of new homes approved in every one of the months in the previous 12 months.A record 1072 new homes were approved in September 2023, nearly double the monthly average of 568 new dwellings between September 2022 and September 2023.

However, two developments – one in Fortitude Valley and a second in South Brisbane – accounted for 884 of September’s 1072 units.In September, there were also new units approved in Felix Street, Lutwyche , Bramston Terrace in Herston , Hertford Street, Upper Mount Gravatt and Hassall Street in Corinda .Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said “the biggest month for development approvals” in Brisbane for more than a year was a positive sign for the housing market.
