The Giants needed to buy goodwill with fans this offseason. Instead, they poured gas on whatever goodwill was left and set it on fire. GrantBrisbee breaks down a disastrous turn of events that left San Francisco without Carlos Correa.

in 10 years, or Michael Harris III in 30 years. There’s no trade that can possibly reclaim some of the goodwill from the last week, and there’s no path to a team that gets as much interest as there was last season, when there wasn’t a ton of interest. Buster Posey announcing that he’s returning for the 2023 season wouldn’t even do it .

The whys of the situation are important, and there will be a lot of time to dig through them, assess blame and direct the anger in an appropriate direction. Right now, though, the anger isn’t nearly as important as the disappointment. The Giants had a clear goal this offseason, and they managed to do the exact opposite. Even worse, they somehow managed to claw through the floor of the worst-case scenario and head straight for the molten core of an existential crisis for the entire fanbase.

It is most certainly not impressive. There are unfortunate turns of events, and then there’s whatever this is. This isn’t the kind of offseason that’s forgotten with a bag of peanuts on opening day. This is the kind of offseason that will be one of the clearest before-and-after demarcation lines in franchise history, regardless of who the bad guys are.

If the bad guys happen to wear expensive clothes and collect dividend checks, this all might be even worse than it appears. But that’s getting ahead of ourselves, and it’s another column for another time after more information comes out. For now, all you need to know is this: What a disaster for the Giants. What a complete, unmitigated disaster.Subscribe to The Athletic for in-depth coverage of your favorite players, teams, leagues and clubs. Try a week on us.
