A major snowstorm is predicted to hit Britain on New Year's Day, bringing over 25cm of snow to some areas. Scotland is expected to be worst affected, with temperatures plummeting well below freezing. Southern England will experience milder conditions.
Britain is bracing for a massive snowstorm, with forecasts predicting over 25cm of snow in some areas on New Year's Day . Despite a mild Christmas period, meteorologists have indicated a sharp turn in weather conditions as the new year approaches. According to WXCharts.com, temperatures are expected to plummet and bring considerable snowfall across the country.
Scotland is set to bear the brunt of the wintry blast, with Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, and particularly Inverness in the Highlands anticipating significant accumulations - up to 58cm in some places. England will also feel the chill, with Newcastle expecting up to 9cm of snow and Yorkshire preparing for impact. Northern Ireland is likely to experience snow too, albeit less intense than other regions, reports The Express. Met Office Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong has commented on the situation: 'From Sunday we will start to see some heavy rain affecting northwestern parts of Scotland. After a brief respite, further rain and strong winds will be in place on Monday and Tuesday across Scotland, as another area of low-pressure approaches.' He added: 'This may be accompanied by some heavy snowfall in the mountains and perhaps to lower elevations.' Large parts of Northern England and Scotland are bracing for a shivering New Year's Day, with temperatures set to plummet well below freezing, leaving only a few areas above zero. In stark contrast, Southern England, including London and the south coast, can expect a milder front with temperatures hovering around 10 degrees. Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tony Wisson remarked, 'Later in the week, wintry showers are likely to be a feature of the forecast as a cold northerly flow becomes established.' Adding to the advice, Neil Armstrong said, 'With such varied and potentially fast-moving weather conditions it is important for people to keep up to date with the forecast.' Areas expected to be affected by the frigid conditions include: Scotland - Caithness
