One hundred thousand here, another hundred thousand there, this is getting beyond a joke. It has been happening ever since the financial crisis, an event that at the time some economists predicted would cause a surge in unemployment similar to that of the Great Depression. They were right when it came to some parts of Europe. But as for the epicentre of the crisis – the US and the UK – there has been no such effect.
