BritainsGotTalent receives 1,121 Ofcom complaints over Diversity’s Black Lives Matter routine.
: ‘I can confirm that we have received 1,121 complaints for Britain’s Got Talent on 5 September, most of which were in relation to the Diversity performance.‘We are assessing the complaints against our broadcasting rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate.’
The routine saw leader Ashley Banjo joined by brother Jordan and Dancing on Ice star Perri Kiely for the performance.supports HTML5 videoIt all started with Ashley, who grounded the dance as a father telling his son the story of 2020, and they touched on all the usual points, narrating by Ashley in a poem of striking clarity.
The narration went: ‘But while we all were hidden, under orders of the Prime Minister, people dusted off their instincts and noticed something more sinister. Another disease, deep rooted in our system, fear, hate and ignorance, but racism was the symptom.’ Banjo then knelt down on a stage with a white police officer behind him, handcuffing him as dancers crowded the stage and mimicked taking pictures of the incident.
In the dance’s most potent moment, however, the dancers of the troupe gathered together and took the knee in protest, as the they echoed the words that Banjo spoke: ‘Black Lives Matter.’
