The army reserves are dangerously low, experts said A group of former defence and security experts have warned that the British Army must ‘prepare genuinely for war’ to deter threats. The New Bletchley Network said the shrinking of army reserves in recent years caused the force to dip below ‘national critical mass’. The warning comes as questions of conscription to deter threats from Russia were raised earlier this year.
‘The Army – and it knows this perfectly well – is absolutely not ready to take its place in Nato in a confrontation with Russia,’ General Sir Richard added. Sir Patrick Sanders said the UK should train a ‘citizen army’ among other steps to put it on a ‘war footing’ in response to rising security threats. Rishi Sunak quickly poured cold water on the idea, though experts have since warned the UK may not have any choice if conflict with Putin turns into a wider European or world war.

Army responds to explosion in Derbyshire villageThe Army has released a statement following an explosion in a Derbyshire village after a device was found. Officers were called to the Langley Avenue area of Cotmanhay, near Ilkeston, after a member of the public found the device on grassland. The police put a cordon in place after being called at around 6.40pm on Sunday, March 17. The Explosives Ordnance Disposal unit of the Army safely destroyed the device by carrying out a controlled explosion in a field near Ilkeston at about 10.40pm. Many people living nearby will have heard a loud bang, but officers from Derbyshire police reassured them that there was no reason to be alarmed. A spokesperson for the Army has now released a statement following the incident.
