The 'big switch on' is due to happen over the coming days
Tens of thousands of British Gas customers have been warned their boiler could stop working in the coming days. The gas supplier, which is the largest in the UK, warned its 50,000 customers that their boiler could pack up with the coming days marking the 'big switch on' for many.
The 'big switch on' is the date most UK households turn the heating on for the first time in autumn and winter, reports Birmingham Live. Households will reach for their thermostat as temperatures fall and our homes grow colder and every year it triggers a huge spike in demand for engineer callouts. As well as the inconvenience, a boiler breakdown is expensive, as it costs on average £200 to get it fixed. And a whole new boiler can cost between £1,500 and £4,764. British Gas service and repair engineer Joanna Flowers said: "Air can enter the system and form bubbles, which stops them from working efficiently. If you notice cold spots, switch your radiators off and after they cool, turn a radiator key in the valve at the top to let the air out.
“Curtains prevent heat loss at night but open them during the day so that the sun can do some of the work,” she said. And she added: “Turning it down just one degree can save around 10 percent on your heating bills, an average of £115 a year." She went on: “Set it to start 15 minutes before you wake up and turn off 30 minutes before bed.”
