A retired Briton has described his miracle escape from floods in Spain
MADRID – A British pensioner escaped with his life in the Valencia floods because the force of the water stopped him from opening his front door.happened last Tuesday, Mr Dalby was forced to seek refuge by floating on top of a mattress with his two dogs for hours until waters went down.
“The water was rising so rapidly. It went from coming under the front door to being about one metre high. I went to a bedroom and saw one of the mattresses floating so I threw the dogs on to it and we stayed there shivering,” Mr Dalby, a retired photographer from London who has lived in Spain for 20 years, told“It was like a nightmare feeling, you feel so hopeless. It was like a tsunami. The doors would not open but I think that is a good thing.
“The biggest feeling we have is anger about the slowness and mismanagement of the response to the disaster by the authorities. We don’t care who helps but as long as they are here,” she said.As a meteorologist, she said she had been following the warnings in the run-up to the floods.
