LISTEN:A British soldier has told a court he escaped from prison and went on the run to show 'what a foolish idea it was having someone of my skillset' behind bars.
Giving evidence at Woolwich Crown Court, Khalife insisted he had no intention of remaining at large - and only escaped to ensure he would be put in a high-security segregated unit when he was transferred to a more dangerous category A prison. Khalife told jurors that '95 per cent' of those in the unit were 'serious sex offenders, rapists, paedophiles, that sort of thing'.The former soldier told Woolwich Crown Court he was helped by a man in his unit to get a job in the prison stores. 'I left and I knew at that moment I would be classified as high risk and I would be put in a high-security unit,' he said. He added: 'I made no attempts to leave the United Kingdom or go towards any direction that would be near a coast.Khalife said he did not intend to disappear for good and deliberately remained in the London area while on the run. Khalife said: 'I was not looking for any help to aid the escape or anything - I made contact out of curiosity.'
