British tourists are being hospitalised, local businesses are shuttering, and cold taps are running hot in southern Spain due to extreme temperatures, according to UK expats in the region KieronMonks reports
British expats living in the region long-term have adapted to extreme heat, he says, staying indoors during peak hours and taking precautions, while new arrivals tend to be more exposed to risks.
“A local doctor advised me to use at least factor 50 cream at all times in the sun,” he said. “But I see English people come here on holiday, in the sun without cream on. You will definitely burn.” The local economy has adapted with businesses suspending activities in the heat of the day. “Now most of the government buildings, offices, and banks shut around 1pm and they don’t go back in the afternoon,” said Mr Wright.Visitors from the UK who would usually come in summer have delayed their trips until September this year, he adds.
