He made the decision to join the conflict after finishing college, driven by a deep desire to aid Ukraine in its defense against Russia's invasion. On a fateful July day, while crossing open ground carrying a heavy pack, James was killed by a drone attack .
Despite the valiant efforts of his American friend, Jason, who rushed to his aid, James succumbed to his injuries. James' father, Graham Wilton, described the immense pain of attending his son's funeral in Ukraine, calling it the most difficult experience of his life. He shared that James had been resolute in his decision to join the fight, despite his family's apprehension. James spent three months in Ukraine receiving combat training, which he described as some of the best days of his life. Jason recounted the harrowing incident to The Sun newspaper, explaining how they were separated by 20 meters when James froze upon spotting a Russian drone overhead. As they attempted to seek cover, weighed down by their backpacks, two additional drones appeared, and James was fatally struck by one. Jason, in a courageous act, returned to James' aid but narrowly escaped another drone attack himself, only to be subsequently injured by a mine. Graham Wilton expressed his profound gratitude to Jason for his bravery and the bond forged with James' fellow soldiers during his emotional two-week trip to Kyiv.
