International Day of Happiness began in 2012 when all countries of the United Nations agreed to create an official, annual fixture on the calendar. The top 10 of the list was made up by Iceland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, New Zealand, Canada and Austria, while Australia was 11th, Germany 17th and the US in 19th place.Prof Laurie Santos runs a course called Psychology and the Good Life at Yale University
"Being happy isn't something that just happens, you've got to practice to be better at it," she adds.Image copyrightProf Santos asks her students to write down what they are grateful for - every night, for a whole week."It might sound quite simple, but we've seen that the students who regularly do this exercise actually tend to be happier," she says.
According to Prof Santos, there's growing research that shows enjoying quality time with your friends and family makes your happier.
