Severe weather conditions are set to disrupt New Year's Eve celebrations across the UK, with heavy rain, strong winds, and snow threatening firework displays and causing transport delays.

Britons are facing a washout New Year's Eve as heavy rain, 70mph gales, and up to eight inches of snow threaten celebrations across the nation. The Met Office has issued an amber rain warning and five yellow warnings, leading to the cancellation of firework events, including Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay festivities due to 'extreme weather'.

Weather warnings blanket Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and northern England, with an amber rain warning in place for Moray and the Highlands until 5pm today (December 31). Central and northern Scotland are under a yellow rain and snow warning until midnight, while the Orkney Islands brace for a yellow snow warning expecting a hefty eight inches of snow. Scotland and northern England will be hit by a yellow wind alert from 11pm, and Northern Ireland faces similar warnings until 2pm. Transport delays are 'likely' as the strong winds, reaching speeds of up to 70mph, continue to cause havoc. A yellow rain warning also looms over the coast of north west England and Wales. The weather warning is in effect from 6pm tonight until 6pm on Wednesday, covering two different years. Met Office expert Craig Snell warned: 'Another system is moving in from the Atlantic. Scotland bearing the brunt of this one with some further heavy rain and snow and strong winds.' He also noted: 'The winds are also picking up for Northern Ireland and northern England through New Year's Eve as well. It will basically be quite an unsettled last day of the year for the northern half of the UK.' For those in the south, he said: 'We will see some rain later on New Year's Eve, but it shouldn't cause too many problems. Apart from if you're out celebrating - you might get a bit damp.' With multiple hazards across the UK, he concluded: 'I think we can probably expect some travel delays right across the UK.
