Brace yourselves for treacherous conditions on the roads and potential power cuts as more snow and lightning strikes are on their way. Parts of the country have been warned to expect sheets of ice on the roads, meaning drivers and cyclists should take extra care this evening.
The A66 trans-Pennine route between County Durham and Cumbria was closed earlier today as rescuers were sent in to recover stranded vehicles. The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for ice for the rest of Friday for much of western Britain for the rest of Friday. A combination of snow showers and lightning could lead to a rare phenomenon known as ‘thundersnow’ – particularly in northwest England and Scotland and in Northern Ireland. These areas could see 5cm of snow today and up to 15cm on higher ground, while some some homes could be hit by power outages.Yellow weather warnings for ice have been put in place across much of the country Watch your footing, as roads and pavements will be covered in ice in some parts of the country Thundersnow is meteorologically the same as thunderstorms caused by air pressure during the summertime, just with snow instead of rain and hail. The snow contained within the thunderstorms often dampens the sound of thunder. This means it often can only be heard from two to three miles away. Met Office forecasters warned that ‘frequent sleet, hail and snow showers may lead to some disruption to travel’ – so be sure to double check your train times. They added that power cuts and ice on the road means there is a ‘slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off’. But by the early hours of Saturday morning rain clouds are set to sweep Britain from the west – slightly raising temperatures while making way for a wet and windy weekend. By the afternoon patches of sunshine are expected to break up the grim weather, while Sunday is expected to be mostly dry – with some showers set for Northern Ireland and northwest Scotland.
